Caring for your Jewellery

Caring For Your Jewellery

  • Diamonds are the hardest known naturally occurring mineral, so it pays to ensure that you store your jewellery separate from one another, to prevent scratching of metal and stones.
  • Antique jewellery requires extra care. These pieces have already stood the test of time and we prefer to see your jewellery back in the store regularly so we can clean and check your pieces for anything that may need repair.
  • Coloured gemstones vary greatly in their hardness and durability. It is best to check with the Rutherford staff on the best way to care for these gems.
  • We recommend taking off your jewellery while doing any activity that may cause hard wear to the piece. This includes things like dishes, gardening, exercising or anything else that could cause you to accidentally knock or scratch your jewellery.
  • If you notice any change in your jewellery item please make sure you bring it in for inspection. For example: catching on clothing, or sharp edges on claws or settings.
  • At Rutherford, we love to look after our clients. Always feel free to bring your Rutherford pieces back to the store to have them cleaned and checked with our compliments.
  • We highly recommend you have adequate insurance to cover your jewellery in the case of loss or damage.

Caring For Your Pearls

  • Cultured pearls are precious gems and should be treated as such.
  • Store your pearls separately from your other jewellery.
  • Apply make-up, hairspray and perfume before putting on your pearls. Contact with these beauty aids may damage your pearls.
  • After wearing pearls, wipe them with a soft clean cloth to remove any perspiration and cosmetic residue.
  • Pearls should be removed when showering or bathing.
  • Ideally pearls should be restrung once a year although it will depend upon how often they are worn.
